day 4 - Hot Rod

OK film lovers, tonight we'll have only a short blurb. Unfortunately, working 13 hours today has left me without much time or energy to wax poetic. So let's go short and simple...

Hot Rod is a bizarre, silly and flat out stupid movie. And it is one of my many guilty pleasures in the vast world that is film. Written by Pam Brady, better known as a writer and producer of South Park films and episodes, and starring Andy Samberg of SNL and The Lonely Island, this exercise in absurdity can truly be evaluated on one scene.

This is the story of a man-child who wants nothing more than to be a stuntman like his dear departed father. Despite numerous defeats at the hands of his stepfather, (not arguments, mano a mano style fights) he decides to use his rather dubious skills to raise the funds necessary to replace his father's heart. The amount: $50,000. Obviously, that is stupid. For me the plot points, the dialogue and the acting are all superfluous to a single scene that not only enjoys skewering a classic moment from a pinnacle 80's movie (if you don't know which one, just start watching every teen movie made during this golden era of teensploitation films and then get back to me when you find it) but also revels in holding a joke for so long it goes from funny to wtf and back to funny again.

While there are many inanely hilarious scenes in this film there is one that stands head and shoulders above them all. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you punchdancing.

  1. Once again, thanks for reminding me that this is a movie I really want to see! However, being a parent of a small child, I can never seem to find the time or energy to indulge in some good adult humor, but I promise to try!
